Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is the pride of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey

SCOTTISH PLAINS, NEW JERSEY – Native of New Jersey Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won gold at the Paris Olympics.

She is the pride of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, and is honored in the school’s “Tradition Meets Tomorrow” hallway.

“This was created in honor of Sydney and all her accomplishments,” said Sister Percylee Hart, the school’s principal. “So now our challenge is to bring it up to date. What a wonderful challenge!”

There are many achievements to be had. McLaughlin-Levrone has already won three gold medals, following her triumph in the women’s 400m hurdles on Thursday, when she broke her own previous world record. It was the sixth time she has broken a world record in the 400m hurdles. He took home two gold medals in Tokyoand was a junior at Union Catholic when she competed in the Olympics for the first time in Rio in 2016.

The school hosted two parties so the Union Catholic community could watch McLaughlin-Levrone compete.

“It’s not gold. It’s more than gold.”

She ran from school hallways to Gatorade labels and Olympic gold.

“Sydney ran through these halls and made it to the Olympics when she was 17. To me, that’s absolutely amazing. She’s a role model for our students,” Hart said.

Hart says McLaughlin-Levrone is an even better person than he is an athlete.

“And that’s what makes her a superstar. It’s not the gold. It’s something that goes beyond the gold. Her character and her humility,” Hart said.
