The claim: Video shows August 8 tornado in Tennessee

An Instagram post from August 8 (direct link, archive link) shows a montage of images of tornadoes and storms.

“Tornado in Tennessee today. Oh my god,” reads a text superimposed over the recording.

The post was shared more than 100 times in one day.

The video is old and does not show an Aug. 8 tornado in Tennessee. There were no reports of tornadoes in the state that day, according to a meteorologist in the area.

No tornadoes were reported on August 8 in Tennessee

On Aug. 8, after the video was posted, National Weather Service meteorologist Cory Mueller told USA TODAY that there had been no reports of tornadoes that day.

“Conditions are not favorable for tornadoes, large tornadoes or severe weather conditions,” he said.

He noted that tornadoes were reported in North Carolina that day.

The video featured in the Instagram post is old — a version was uploaded to YouTube on July 12. The montage includes clips from a 2023 hailstorm in Texas and a storm in Michigan in May.
