What are the best and worst cities in Ohio for life expectancy?

Where Ohioans live offers a clue as to how long they will live.

Life expectancy varies by ZIP code, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Across Ohio, life expectancy ranges from a low of 60 years in one Columbus neighborhood to just over 89 years in a city in northeast Ohio.

In general, Ohioans do not live as long as people in other states.

In 2019, Ohio’s average life expectancy of 76.9 years ranked 42nd among the 50 states. In 2020, Ohio’s life expectancy dropped even further to 75.3 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By comparison, the life expectancy for Americans born in 2020 was 77.3 years, the lowest in the country since 2003, according to the CDC.

The Dispatch analyzed CDC data to find the best and worst communities for life expectancy in the state and locally in Franklin County. Cities and neighborhoods are ranked below.

  2. Old North Neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio: 61.1 years.
  3. Stuebenville, Ohio: 61.6 years.
  4. Toledo’s downtown and Lagrange neighborhoods: 62.5 years
  5. Warren, Ohio: 63.2 years.

  1. In Stow, Ohio: 89.2 years.
  2. Shaker Heights, Ohio: 88.6 years.
  3. Blue Ash, Ohio: 88.2 years.
  4. Dublin, Ohio: 87.6 years.
  5. Mason, Ohio: 87.4 years.
