What we saw in Week 0 of AHSAA Gadsden Area High School Football

The Alabama high school football season is back and after Week 0 there is a lot to look forward to in the Gadsden area.

There was plenty of action starting Thursday with wins for Gadsden City, Geraldine and Spring Garden while Sardis, Sand Rock and Albertville struggled.

On Friday, Piedmont, Guntersville and Jacksonville all won big area games, including Piedmont in a last-second thriller to defeat rival Cherokee County and prove they can still meet the Bulldog standard.

PIEDMONT: ‘Same old Piedmont’: Big win over Cherokee County shows Bulldogs can still make the grade

RIVALRIES: Sardis and Geraldine show the importance of high school football rivalries by renewing the series

BEST PERFORMERS: Boaz’s Tyler Pierce throws five touchdowns to lead Gadsden Area High School’s top students

The City of Gadsden makes an important statement

In what was arguably a matchup between the two best teams in Class 6A north of the Birmingham area, Gadsden City fought back from some self-inflicted mistakes to defeat No. 8 Muscle Shoals. It was an impressive debut for new quarterback Kai Franklin, who threw for nearly 250 yards and two touchdowns. It is considered one of the biggest wins of the Ali Smith era.

Coming into the year, there were high expectations surrounding the Titans’ program and they lived up to the demand in the first game. It’s possible we’ll see this matchup again later in the playoffs, with a trip to the semifinals or even a Blue Card on the line.

Guntersville’s two-back system gets off to a good start

One of the more interesting stories is how Guntersville would handle the two-back system with Julyon Jordan and Enelson Delva. One game later, everything seemed to be going well as Jordan rushed for 150 yards and Delva added 100 yards and three scores. This helped the Wildcats to a big win over Southside.

Elsewhere in the area, Cherokee County’s Keyshawn Woods scored three touchdowns while Koal Garrett ran for 189 yards in a loss to Guntersville. Aiden Parham and TJ Worthy had strong performances for their team. The area’s top running back, Logan Anderson, will start next week.

New coaches start off with difficulties

Ben Stewart, Scott Peavey, Matt Harris and Tanner Nelson didn’t get off to the best start in their debuts. Stewart’s Panthers fell to Guntersville in a game that was never close, while Peavey’s Etowah team fell in a 43-33 blowout to a tough Jacksonville team that is finding its new stars. Matt Harris’ homecoming at West End started strong, but Pleasant Valley came away with a 28-12 win.

The only new coach to start with a win this year was Derrick Sewell, who got Gaston into the win column with a big win that could help the momentum they built in the offseason carry over into the season.
