‘The Boys’ is once again dethroned from Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 list by a new show

Amazon Prime Video’s biggest shows have been staying in the top 10 for a long time, or even at #1. And despite having just wrapped up season 4 a month ago, The Boys has been #1 pretty consistently so far. It’s now been dethroned by The Rings of Power, which will air its second season in a few days.

The Rings of Power season 2 premieres on Thursday, August 29. So what’s clear is that you’ll now have to rewatch the first season before it premieres. After all, it’s been a year and a half since the first season came out and there’s a lot to remember given the wide variety of characters and plots. If you don’t want to rewatch the entire season, you can do a quick recap on YouTube. Eight hours is a long time after all. Here’s a pretty good one that will only take you 15 minutes:

While it didn’t make a huge cultural impact, that doesn’t mean The Rings of Power hasn’t been watched by plenty of viewers. The Rings of Power continues to break viewership records for Amazon Prime, with 25 million people watching it on the first day, the most ever for a new series. However, only 37% of its audience is said to have finished the full season, which isn’t great.

Amazon has a lot riding on The Rings of Power with its massive budget and commitment to offering five full seasons of the series. The series has divided fans, to say the least. Most critics liked it, with an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes for the first season. Fans didn’t like it, instead giving it a 38% audience score. Sure, there are exceptions, but that’s definitely not something that has pleased many hardcore LOTR fans. Even the controversial Hobbit movies were rated positively by fans. And of course, almost everyone believes that the original trilogy is probably the best fantasy film series of all time.

I’m sure we’re entering a new period where Rings of Power will be the number one series on the service for as long as it’s on air, which will be well into the fall. Like last season, there are actually three episodes that air on the first day, and then the show will run for eight episodes, ending on October 3.

I want to highlight at least one more show on Amazon Prime Video’s top 10 list, which would be From, the excellent horror series that gets overlooked (but being at #3 here is solid) and something I’d recommend all horror fans check out. I’m very surprised to see From so high up, since its third season doesn’t even air until September 22, 2024. But yeah, check it out. And, uh, Rings of Power too, I guess. We’ll see how that goes.
