Magic Johnson lashes out at Anthony Edwards for his opinion on former NBA players

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that if you want to offend Magic Johnson, you should… In fact You have to get out of your own way.

Beyond his youthful charm Whenever he appears in public, the Los Angeles Lakers legend is known for almost always making bland, often completely neutral statements about the NBA and other sports on his Twitter account — except when the Boston Celtics won the 2024 title, because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings..

Johnson couldn’t help himself, however, when he heard Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards criticize the apparent lack of skill among veteran NBA players.

In an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Johnson said he wouldn’t respond to Edwards’ opinion… before stating that he doesn’t recognize basketball players who haven’t won championships. Phew.

The crucial part of that insult is that Johnson wasn’t just referring to Edwards not winning an NBA title. He was also referring to college (Edwards played at Georgia from 2019 to 2020, where the Bulldogs failed to qualify for the men’s NCAA tournament either time) and high school (Edwards did in fact win a Georgia high school state championship, something Johnson admitted to being unsure of).

Of that From that perspective, what an exciting comeback for a kid who won a high school state title at Lansing, the NCAA men’s title with Michigan State and five NBA championships with the Lakers.

Edwards was simply being himself in criticizing older generations for what he perceived as a lack of basketball ability. That’s classic Anthony Edwards shining through in all his glory. Take it or leave it. But now he’s drawn the ire of Magic Johnson, perhaps the nicest man in major American sports, a guy who might drop a nice coat over a rainwater-filled pothole in the street so a random stranger could walk across it.

It’s not exactly winning an NBA championship, but I’d almost consider that an achievement in itself.
