2. BISHOP AMAT (1-0)

After a 4-6 season in 2023, the Lancers’ 49-6 win over West Covina in the season opener is just what the doctor ordered. Running back Ryan Salcedo delivered with a 192-yard, three-touchdown performance and quarterback Frankie Villalbazo threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Now a big game awaits them at rival St. Paul. Last year, St. Paul came up short when attempting a game-winning two-point conversion, falling 29-28.

4. SAO PAULO (1-0)

The Swordsmen answered a lot of questions with a 21-17 victory over Newport Harbor. Quarterback Gabriel Castaneda scored the game-winning touchdown on a goal-line sneak with 1:24 left. They will now face rival Bishop Amat at home, which they haven’t beaten since 2000.

5. NORTH VIEW (1-0)

The Vikings’ trip to Las Vegas for the season opener wasn’t all that great last year, but they made up for it this year, going to Vegas again and beating Durango 33-0. The Vikings’ defense was outstanding, and if they can keep scoring like this, watch out.

6. BEAUTIFUL (1-0)

Texas A&M commit Noah Mikhail and Washington-commit defensive back Dylan Robinson were impressive in a dominant 27-7 win over Muir. Defensively, they held off a Mustangs team with plenty of weapons. Now comes Ontario Christian, which features quarterback Daniel Mielke, who played at Bonita last season as a freshman and then transferred.

7. SAN FRANCISCO (0-1)

The Golden Knights took a beating and were left banged up in a 38-7 road loss to St. Bonaventure, a team that won last year’s CIF-SS Division 3 title. Golden Knights quarterback John Sanders was injured in the third quarter and did not return. He will be evaluated this week as another tough game against Mira Costa looms.

8. LA SERNA (0-1)

After winning the CIF-SS Division 4 and Division 3-AA state championships last year, the Lancers struggled with their young team in a 42-21 loss to Damien. Sophomore quarterbacks Jordan Bonilla and Grady Long both threw for more than 100 yards, but defensively, the Lancers need some work. They’ll get another test against up-and-comer Schurr next.

Next: vs. Schurr at California HS, Friday, 7 p.m.

9. COVINA (1-0)

Colts quarterback Jacob Duronslet will go down as the school’s all-time leading passer this season, but it was senior Kwame Parrish who delivered with 251 yards and three touchdowns in their 51-14 win over California. Duronslet still threw for 135 yards and three touchdowns. But there were questions before the season about their ground game, and they were answered.

10. MUIR (0-1)

Nothing went right for the Mustangs in a 27-7 loss to Bonita. They couldn’t run or pass the ball with any consistency and it won’t get any easier going forward. They have a bye week and then face Charter Oak and St. Francis at home before starting Pacific League play.
