Struggle

  • At least 18 people were killed and 37 wounded on Sunday in Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk.
  • Reuters news agency said its security adviser Ryan Evans was killed and two Reuters journalists were wounded, one seriously, in a Russian strike that hit a hotel in Kramatorsk, about 20 km (12 miles) from the front line in eastern Ukraine, on Saturday night. Three other members of the team escaped unharmed.
  • Russian authorities said six civilians were killed in Ukrainian attacks in regions bordering Russia.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces advanced up to 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) into Russia’s Kursk region, taking control of two more settlements there.
  • Ukraine has urged Belarus to withdraw what it described as a significant volume of Belarusian forces and equipment, including tanks and artillery, deployed in the Gomel region on their common border. The Foreign Ministry warned Belarus not to make “tragic mistakes” while under pressure from Moscow.

Politics and diplomacy

  • Zelenskyy said negotiations with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Switzerland on a second peace summit were ongoing. Zelenskyy also said he had told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in kyiv, that he would support India hosting the event.
  • Pope Francis has condemned the Ukrainian government’s decision to ban a branch of the country’s Orthodox Church linked to Russia. “Do not touch the churches,” the pope said in his weekly prayers, a day after Zelenskyy signed the ban.

  • Russia’s Defense Ministry said it has sent more missiles and artillery to the Kursk region, where thousands of Ukrainian troops advanced across the Russian border on August 6.
