Suspect in fatal shooting of Riley student in June turns himself in to South Bend police

SOUTH BEND — Derrick Myles, who was wanted for murder in the June fatal shooting of 16-year-old Alyyus Enoexpettiford, turned himself in to the South Bend Police Department Sunday afternoon and was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail, police announced in a news release.

At a joint news conference on Aug. 22, the South Bend Police Department and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office asked for the public’s help in finding Myles, who had been charged with the murder of Riley High School student. Myles also faces a firearms charge.

South Bend police were called to the 500 block of East Victoria Street around 5:45 p.m. on June 14, for a report of shots fired. Enoexpettiford was found in a backyard with apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.

Enoexpettiford was with a group in the backyard of a home he was visiting when Myles, 19, rode up to them on his bicycle and accused some of the group of damaging his relative’s home by throwing rocks at it, prosecutors said in unveiling the charges against Myles. Witnesses told officers that Myles argued with Enoexpettiford, pulled out a gun, fired one shot and fled, leaving his bike behind, police and prosecutors said at the news conference.

According to prosecutor Kenneth Cotter, the suspect and victim did not know each other and Enoexpettiford denied throwing stones.

South Bend police did not release any other information Sunday afternoon.
