Dangerous heat and severe storms on Monday

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sunday started out with dense fog and ended with high temperatures and oppressive humidity. Highs reached between 90 and 100 degrees with dew points in the mid-80s. Another hot day is about to start the week.

Sunday night there is a very small chance of an isolated severe thunderstorm brushing the far western and northern counties in the KTIV viewing area. If a storm does manage to reach our area, it could contain large hail greater than 2″ in diameter.

The rest of Sunday night will be mostly clear and humid, with a chance of scattered fog. Nighttime lows will be around 21°C.

First day of weather alert: Monday(asset)

We have issued a Daytime Weather Alert for Monday due to continued dangerous heat in the afternoon and now severe thunderstorms in the late evening and overnight hours.

Monday will continue to be dangerously hot. High temperatures on Monday will be in the mid-90s to mid-95s, with dew points in the mid-70s to mid-75s, and even in the mid-80s to mid-85s in some spots. Heat index values ​​will likely be between 102 and 112. A heat advisory is in effect for Monday until 8 p.m.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are likely to form along the cold front Monday night and overnight. The primary threats are hail greater than 2 inches in diameter, damaging winds that could exceed 70 mph, and an isolated tornado.

There will be enhancing severe weather on Monday, generally across our northern and western counties in the KTIV viewing area.

Cooler air will arrive on Tuesday, with some rain showers continuing through the morning. High temperatures will be in the mid-80s, with some sunshine in the afternoon.

High temperatures will again be in the mid-90s on Wednesday. A few more isolated storms are possible and there will be a better chance of rain Wednesday night.

Another cold front will arrive with scattered thunderstorms on Thursday. Rain will push highs above 70 degrees on Thursday.

Near-normal temperatures are expected through the weekend, in the mid-80s. In the extended forecast, it looks like cooler weather could arrive in early September.
