The World Surf League (WSL) WRV Outer Banks Pro presented by Pacifico, a qualifying series (QS) 1000 for men and women, made strong progress on opening day. The men’s Rounds 104 and 96 provided moments of magic with aerial maneuvers and power surfing before high tide overtook the swell, forcing event organizers to suspend competition after Round 96. Now, the Round 64 of top-seeded men is set, while the women await their debut.

Caleb Crozier takes flight and wins his debut in the round of 16

A decisive performance by Caleb Crozier (USA) took the Southern California competitor into the Round of 64 with his last-second aerial antics. Crozier needed a 6.16 (out of a possible 10) when he took off for his final attempt, with the clock expiring after he stood up, and landed a reverse aerial to secure a 7.50 and the series win over a Teo Grani (PAN), who also advanced.

“I was a wreck thinking God would just give me one more wave and I’d make it,” Crozier said. “I heard the countdown and thought I could do two laps or just go check out the section to do a jump. I did and thank God I made it. Being able to build confidence is a dream and I’m happy to build the house from here. I was so discouraged in my Virginia Beach heat that I just needed one wave after getting a good score so I’m happy we have waves here, it’s like a little Duranbah (Australia).”

Tex Mitchell advances to top 64 with early success

Back to the QS jersey in Virginia Beach and now the Outer Banks, Tex Mitchell (USA) reminded his opponents of his potential and powered through a straight air to set the tone in the Round of 96. Mitchell’s early exit at Virginia Beach only propelled the young Californian toward his debut here at the WRV Outer Banks to match the day’s best single wave score of 7.50.

“I was just trying to make turns and getting stuck, so I was hoping I could get to that section and luckily it gave me some energy,” Mitchell said. “I really like it here. There’s a lot more scenery, good vibes, good food and the waves are super fun.”

Cose Stoyanoff stays strong for the East Coast contingent

The East Coast itself Stoyanoff Sews (USA) put the field on early alert with a dynamic display of backhand surfing to total 13.15 (out of a possible 20). Stoyanoff took advantage of his knowledge of this lineup, coming from Virginia Beach just down the road, and now looks to further up the road against the top-ranked competitors.

“Pier Bowl is a lot of fun for my backhand and it feels good to see every wave I hit getting better and better,” Stoyanoff said. “I was excited when I got here and saw there were waves. I’m excited for the rest of the week. It looks like there will be some fun waves on Saturday and Sunday, so I’m looking forward to trying to get some sets in to get there.”

He also achieved victories in the round of 16. Carl’s Burger (USA), Kai Gale Grani(PAN), Giorgio Gomez (COLUMN), Jake Dodson (USA), Makai Castle (USA), Tender Lavik (USA), Matton Bath (USA), Sebastian Mendes (USA), Eeli’s temperament (FIN), Mason O’Toole (USA), Logan Radd (USA), Nicholas Epps(PUR), everyone moves on to the Round of 64 with plenty of momentum.

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:30 a.m. EDT for a possible meeting at 8:00 a.m. EDT.
