Forecasts for Labor Day weekend show temperatures in the Milwaukee area closer to normal. Although a few storms are forecast for Thursday night, the rest of the weekend is expected to be quiet.

A double dose of near-record heat and intense thunderstorms have battered Milwaukee-area residents this week, but forecasters say a reprieve could come over the weekend.

To start off this week, Milwaukee recorded high temperatures of 94 degrees, with heat indices that made the wind chill approach 100 degrees. In addition to the high temperatures in the area, there was also high humidity, making it an ideal mix for thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday’s high temperature is expected to reach just 74 degrees in the city of Milwaukee and 78 degrees in other areas outside the city, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday’s temperature is close to the average high temperature for late August, 79 degrees.

Nake Falkinham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, discussed the conditions over the past few days.

“All that heat and humidity in the area kind of set the stage for severe weather,” he said.

Storms cause damage and accidents in Milwaukee

According to the National Weather Service, about 0.14 inches of rain fell in Milwaukee between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Winds in the area caused some branches to fall on power lines, leading to power outages amid high temperatures.

The winds were so strong in one area that they caused a tree to fall onto the road and nearly hit a cyclist.

In the video you can see how the wind swings the trees back and forth until one falls onto the road, also knocking down an electric cable.

A cyclist on the road fails to brake in time and falls directly onto the fallen wood.

A pedestrian walking on the sidewalk comes to the aid of the cyclist.

Temperatures and storms will calm down towards the end of the week

As we head into the end of the week and Labor Day weekend, temperatures and weather conditions are expected to become less extreme.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures will remain mild for the rest of the week, with highs only reaching the mid-70s and low-80s.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday night and into Friday.

Labor Day weekend is also forecast to be mostly clear and dry, with a high temperature in the mid-80s on Saturday.

Labor Day is expected to be sunny and rain-free, with a cool high temperature around 70 degrees.
