Two dead in truck collision on Sagamu-Benin highway

Two people were killed on Tuesday when a truck travelling in the wrong direction collided with another truck on the Sagamu-Benin highway in Ogun State.

A traffic official with knowledge of the incident who was not authorized to speak to the media told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that one of the victims was driving in the wrong direction on the highway at full speed when his vehicle collided with an oncoming vehicle, killing him and another person.

The source said: “A fatal accident occurred a few metres from Nairaland Oil and Gas filling station towards Sagamu from Odogbolu on the Sagamu-Benin highway. Traffic was affected and diverted from Odogbolu junction towards Nairaland Oil and Gas filling station.”

Confirming the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Wednesday, spokesperson for the State Traffic Enforcement and Compliance Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the vehicles involved were an unregistered DAF truck and another DAF truck with registration number URM164XA.

He added that three people were involved and two people were killed and one person seriously injured.

Akinbiyi said the body of the wrong-way driver of the deceased was deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary, while the police handed over the second victim to his family.

He said: “According to an eyewitness account, the unregistered white DAF truck was travelling in the wrong direction (traffic violation), at excessive speed and collided with the green DAF truck which was in its right lane.

“The driver of the unregistered white Daf truck died at the scene and the porter of the green Daf truck later died from injuries sustained in the incident as he was caught between the tyres.

“The trapped driver who was driving against traffic was removed and taken to the Ijebu-Ode General Mortuary by Papa Oscar (the police); the presumed dead motorcyclist was also handed over to the family and the injured victim was rescued before our arrival while TRACE operatives were on the ground controlling and monitoring traffic.”

However, the TRACE spokesperson expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid exceeding speed limits when driving on the road.

“While TRACE, FRSC and the police stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and injured victims, motorists are again urged to avoid speeding due to its consequences,” he concluded.

He had attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed, saying it caused the vehicle to fall onto the opposite stretch of road due to loss of control and the slippery nature of the road.
