Cabrillo women were held scoreless in their first soccer match

The Cabrillo College women’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 non-conference loss to visiting Cañada on Tuesday.

Freshman Justine Chetcuti scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute. The Colts got an insurance goal when sophomore Sarah King scored in the 71st minute.

The Seahawks (0-1-0) return to action on Tuesday, when they play at Sierra (1-0-0) in Rocklin at 4 p.m.

Professional basketball

G League United roster revealed: The NBA G League has announced the roster for G League United, which will face BC Mega MIS, a top-tier international program from Serbia, at the third annual Fall Invitational in Santa Cruz on Sept. 4-6.

The G League United roster includes guards Jordan Bowden, Charlie Brown Jr., Taze Moore, Brodric Thomas, Keisei Tominaga and Isaiah Wong; guard/forward Deonte Burton; forwards Juan Toscano-Anderson, Robert Baker II, Michael Foster Jr. and Louis King; and forward/center Alex Reese.

The team will be coached by current San Diego Clippers head coach Paul Hewitt.

Both exhibition games will take place at Kaiser Permanente Arena at 7 p.m.

Professional baseball

De Geus opted for: The Miami Marlins optioned right-hander Brett de Geus, a Cabrillo College alumnus, to Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Monday.

De Geus appeared in seven games after being called up by Miami on Aug. 9. In 5 2/3 innings, he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four.

With his move to the minors, the Marlins freed up a spot on their 26-man active roster for right-handed reliever Mike Baumann, who was claimed off waivers Sunday.

Golf

NCPGA Assistant Championship: Spring Hills Golf Course’s Isaac Weintraub placed 18th out of 72 players in the 2024 PGA NorCal Assistant Championship at Round Hill Country Club in Alamo on Monday.

Weintraub, a former standout at Santa Cruz High and San Jose State University, shot two rounds of 75 for a total of 150, 6 over par.

Woodbridge Golf & Country Club’s Ryan Williams earned medalist honors with his 6-under 138 total.

Holes in one: San Jose’s Matt Romig aced the 197-yard third hole at Pasatiempo Golf Club with a 4-hybrid on Friday. It’s the second ace hole of his career.

San Jose’s Steve Yoshioka also made a hole-in-one at Pasatiempo. He used a 3-hybrid on Saturday to record his third career hole-in-one.

Corrections

High School Football: Several players who excelled in the Santa Cruz County soccer tournament were misidentified in Monday’s print edition due to an incorrect roster.

Watsonville’s Anthony Rizzo connected with Patrick Miller-Brown on a 20-yard touchdown pass in a session against Santa Cruz. And the Wildcats’ Joseph Mendez recovered a fumble.
