10-foot python found in man’s backyard

PIKESVILLE, Md. (WBAL) – Most people probably don’t want to see a snake in their backyard, but even pest control employees said they were shocked to see a 10-foot python outside a Maryland home on Tuesday.

“We don’t normally see that around here, so it was a total shock from the start,” said Ihab Sahal of All Star Pest Management.

Sahal, the branch manager, said they received a call from a man in Pikesville who saw the 10-foot reptile in his backyard around 1 p.m.

When Sahal and his co-worker arrived, they found the python coiled under a tree. They put on their gloves and sprang into action.

“We thought it might be someone’s pet, so we gauged how aggressive it would be. It started hissing a bit when we got close,” Sahal said. “Then, one guy distracted it from one end and the other guy came up and grabbed it by the head.”

He said that handling that slippery guy was quite an experience: he is pure muscle.

“To move something like that, it’s crazy just to feel the force of it,” Sahal said of the python.

Once they had the snake under control, they put it inside a giant cooler to keep it contained.

“I put a bunch of bungee cords on it so I wouldn’t have to drive down the highway with a 10-foot snake loose in the back of my truck,” Sahal said.

This is the first time he’s faced something like this, but he said he wasn’t too nervous.

“It was fantastic. I enjoyed it and if I got another call, I would be there,” Sahal said.

While it’s unclear how the python got into the neighbor’s yard, Sahal said Howard County Animal Control agreed to pick up the snake.
