Lockdown lifted after threat to Chattanooga State Community College

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Tennessee university issued a warning for students on campus Thursday morning.

Chattanooga State Community College posted on X that students should shelter in place while police patrol the campus.

At 12:06 p.m. Central Standard Time, the lockdown was lifted. Classes were canceled and the university will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., the university said the campus was clear of any threat, but students remained under lockdown protocols until it was officially lifted.

The students were ordered to enter as quickly as possible and lock the doors.

On Facebook, the school posted “TigerAlert: As this situation continues to develop, please remain in a state of isolation until further notice. If anyone is experiencing a medical emergency or personal crisis, please notify campus security immediately. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. We will continue to keep you informed.”

During a news conference, Amy Maxwell of Hamilton County Emergency Management Services said the credible threat was directed at the school’s main campus on Amnicola Highway. Campus police, the Chattanooga Police Department, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Hamilton County Park Rangers responded to the campus.

A building-by-building and room-by-room search of the campus was conducted as officers and agents attempted to confirm the threat. Students remained locked down during the campus search.

Another separate concern on campus were reports of a gas leak, which the Chattanooga Fire Department was investigating.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
