Spearfish High School opens new career and technical education center

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The Spearfish School District hosted the grand opening of the Spearfish High School Career and Technical Education Center on Wednesday. After a two-year, $15 million project, the facility is ready to host specialized courses for students.

“We have eight different programs here,” said Spearfish School District Superintendent Kirk Easton. “We have family consumer sciences, health sciences, business, computer applications, construction trades, welding and fabrication, automotive and woodworking.”

The new facility not only offers new opportunities for students, but is also a chance for Easton to get back into the classroom, something he says he is excited about. Easton will be teaching construction courses where students will spend the year building a 1,200-square-foot home.

New teachers have also been brought on board to teach introductory courses. Automotive instructor Shantayl Pochop graduated from Spearfish High School a few years ago and has come on board this year to teach auto maintenance and mechanics courses. While Pochop said the internship she did in high school was helpful, she says she wishes the Career and Technical Education Center had been around when she was a student.
