– The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Senior Citizens Affairs recently concluded Breastfeeding Awareness Month with a high-impact event, the Breastfeeding Fiesta Workshop held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at the St. Jude Hospital Conference Room. This workshop brought together parents and medical professionals in a shared commitment to promote and support breastfeeding in Saint Lucia.

The workshop was more than just an educational session, it was a celebration of breastfeeding, as highlighted by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Senior Citizens Affairs’ Chief Nutritionist, Lisa Hunt. “Today we are finishing off with a breastfeeding session that we call the breastfeeding party because breastfeeding should be celebrated. We want all the people of Saint Lucia to understand that this is not easy, however, for breastfeeding to be a success, we need everyone’s support,” stressed chief nutritionist Lisa Hunt.

The event also highlights the government’s commitment to improving breastfeeding support systems. The Minister of Health, Welfare and Senior Citizens Affairs, the Honourable Moses Jn Baptiste, reiterated the importance of the collective effort of society to promote breastfeeding. “The whole society must come together to ensure that we encourage breastfeeding among parents in Saint Lucia. Saint Lucia is currently working on implementing the Baby Friendly initiative in our hospitals. This initiative creates a hospital environment that supports, protects and promotes breastfeeding with the aim of increasing breastfeeding rates in Saint Lucia.” The Minister of Health stated:

Participants, like Tara Renee, expressed satisfaction with the impact of the workshop. “It was very informative. I am very pleased with the outcome and with everyone who participated in the workshop. It is nice to see how everyone relates to their children. So I would like to see more workshops like this one.” Renee shared, reflecting on the positive reception of the event.

Events like these play a crucial role in achieving higher breastfeeding rates and improving the overall health and well-being of mothers and children across the island.

The Breastfeeding Fiesta Workshop not only provided valuable knowledge but also reinforced the importance of community and institutional support in fostering a breastfeeding-friendly culture in St. Lucia.
