Governor Tony Evers visits Superior High School and calls for funding for public schools

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers visited Superior High School to meet with staff and students on the first day of school on Tuesday, September 3.

Evers gave students a tour of the school, greeting the principal, food service staff and teachers on his way through the building.

Evers spoke with Superior High School leaders about his reasons for visiting Superior Wisconsin.

“I enjoy coming to Superior. I come as often as I can. It’s important for me to understand the issues that affect Superior. I’ve been in the school district several times and we’ve been to the university several times and that helps me be a better governor,” said Gov. Tony Evers. “It’s a no-brainer to come here and I love coming here. There are great people and a great opportunity for me.”

Evers also spoke about the growing number of referendums on funding public schools in Wisconsin and his concerns about the future of school districts.

“Many school districts are turning to a referendum for the first time, not to build a new building, but to pay for aides. This is not a situation we want to be in in the state of Wisconsin,” said Gov. Tony Evers. “We don’t want to see any school district go out of business. We need to take this opportunity to think about what we do as a state when it comes to funding our schools. It’s simple: School districts should not have to turn to a referendum to keep their lights on.”
