Registration now open for Macomb Community College MORE programs – Macomb Daily

At the end of summer, just as children look forward to returning to school, Macomb County seniors look forward to classes, trips, seminars and enrichment opportunities offered by the Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE).

The session begins on October 5th.

This year’s MORE, presented annually by Macomb Community College (MCC), features more than 50 classes and three field trips covering topics from local history and science to nature, health and wellness.

This fall also marks the program’s 10th anniversary.

“For a decade, Macomb Community College has offered a dedicated program for older adults in our community to explore and expand their interests, engage in thoughtful dialogue and just have fun,” said William Wood, director of cultural affairs and community engagement at MCC, in a news release.

Nearly half of the classes are new, and about 35% of previously offered classes have been updated with new content. A selection is also available via Zoom for those unable to attend in person.

Registration for fall programs is now open.

Each course offered lasts approximately two hours with time reserved for a question and answer period and is taught by experts in the field.

To give you an idea, some of the highlights of the fall session will include:

Medicare Simplified

Adam Simon, with over 14 years of experience in the insurance industry, will lead a presentation on Original Medicare and how it can be combined with a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan.

Red flags for fraud and security in online shopping

Monica Beach, Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula Education Foundation Manager, will highlight some fraud schemes currently being seen locally, identify how to spot red flags to avoid becoming a victim, and outline actions to help support safe online shopping experiences. This course is also available via Zoom.

Rough Seas: The Edmund Fitzgerald

Presenter Charlie Shelton, a community outreach interpreter for Huron-Clinton Metroparks, specializes in Michigan history and will present the story of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and delve into the causes of the ship’s sinking. This presentation is also available via Zoom.

Field trips scheduled for MORE’s fall session include a tour of Pewabic Pottery with a workshop on how to glaze tiles the same way the Pewabic manufacturing team does, a tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and a tour of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is a National Historic Landmark.

Seniors can choose from four PLUS packages. First-time attendees can try out the program with a three-class package for $30. A seven-class package is $56, with 10 classes for $75. A special flexible package is also available for $120 for 14 classes. Those choosing this package may choose additional classes beyond the 14 included in the package at no additional charge five days prior to class time and the class must have capacity to accommodate all attendees. Field trips may require additional fees.

MORE classes are held at the Macomb University Center on the university’s Central Campus at 44575 Garfield Rd., in Clinton Township. To view the course catalog and register, visit LorenzoCulturalCenter.com/MORE.
