One dead and one hospitalized after shooting on Benton Boulevard

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – On Sept. 3 at late 11:30 p.m., officers were patrolling near 55th and Prospect Ave. when they heard gunshots east across the road.

At 55th Street and South Benton, officers found two shooting victims, a man and a woman.

The woman is being treated for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The man, identified as Shroy Lapsely, 39, was pronounced dead at the same hospital at approximately 1 a.m. on Sept. 4.

Detectives and crime scene investigators processed the scene for evidence and canvassed witnesses as they worked to identify a suspect.

This came on the same day that city leaders announced they want to invest in mental health services, increase police presence and engage with the community to promote safety for everyone, especially in the area of ​​31st Street and Prospect Avenue.
