Focus on three things to live a longer, healthier life

BOISE — The keys to aging gracefully are within our reach, for the most part. Three things: moderation, exercise and socializing.

  • Socializing involves real interactions in person, not on social media.
  • Meltzer says social media can be useful, but it doesn’t provide real social interaction.
  • Exercise, including cardio, balance, and weight lifting.
  • Exercise doesn’t have to be intense. Walking, gardening, or cycling are all good options.

Aging gracefully – how do people do it? I’m senior reporter Roland Beres from Wellness Wednesday, where we’re healthier together. And I have tips for getting through the golden years in good shape.

As we age, staying active is key to good health.

“The more we learn about aging, the more powerful exercise seems to be. It really is a fundamental cause or driving force for good health. There are different types and you have to choose the one that is right for you,” said Dr. Daniel Meltzer.

Dr. Meltzer says the old adage of moderation in everything is pretty much true, with a few exceptions.

“In most cases, you can eat a lot of healthy food and exercise to some extent. Certainly when it comes to alcohol and other things like that, moderation or abstinence is the safest option,” Meltzer said.

And while diet and exercise are important, Dr. Meltzer says socialization is most important.

“The number one factor driving longevity is social connectedness: People who have had deep, meaningful relationships have had a greater quantity and quality of life,” Meltzer said.

And that doesn’t include social media.
