Winnipeg News: Cyclist hit by car during protest

A car struck a bicyclist during a demonstration at Portage and Main on Wednesday afternoon.

The protest came after a woman was killed by a Winnipeg police vehicle near a homeless encampment Monday night near Fort Rouge Park.

Images from the scene show several people hanging from the car and the vehicle being surrounded.

There were no ambulances at the scene, but the driver of the vehicle was seen with blood on his face.

Dozens of protesters moved to the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters, where red handprints were placed on the exterior doors, representing missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Police said earlier on Wednesday that they were monitoring the protest.

“There is a public expectation that all citizens will conduct themselves in a lawful, courteous and respectful manner,” police wrote in a news release.

“Violence will not be tolerated. The Winnipeg Police Service will respond to unlawful acts in an appropriate and professional manner.”
