A closer look at the weapons found during the new school year

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A Fatal shooting at a Barrow County school It’s something that hits close to home for all parents, no matter where an incident like this occurs.

Possibly because we are no strangers to guns being found on our local school campuses.

Since the school year began, weapons have been found in Cross Creek High School and Butler High Schoolas well as a weapon that was found in a Richmond Hill High School student at a bus stop after school.

Two knives have also been found in Murphy Middle School and Richmond Hill High School.

And last school year, the I-TEAM found a gun was found on a Richmond County school campus nearly every month.

The CSRA is certainly part of a growing trend in schools.

We know that Richmond County Schools has taken steps to ensure increased safety throughout the district.

Mantrell Wilson, The police chief with the school systemsays they have 40 school resource officers making sure schools are safe throughout the day, that includes all middle and high schools.

The district is beginning to push technology as a way to keep students safe.

We know that Richmond County does not have metal detectors or any type of AI weapon detectors.

We found that these options may not always be the best deterrent or solution due to errors that may exist in the systems.

But they have a new button on a badge that can alert authorities to any problems on campus.

We have seen this in more and more school districts in our area.

They are also testing four new portable weapon detectors at football matches.

Officials say they are doing what they can to stay on top of everything that’s happening in the district.

“We have weekly meetings with the deputy superintendent and the building administrator to make sure we are together for any information that has been received that week,” Wilson said.

Wilson also wants parents to know that if there is a threat, they will find out about it through a so-called “scream point,” which is the call or text they send if something happens. So make sure your contact information is up to date.

He also adds that if you have any issues, contact your office through the portal and file a report.

Additionally, our local sheriff’s offices do Annual Active Shooter Training.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says they just completed their training in May.
