Man gets 14 years in prison for raping homeless woman in Northeast Portland

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A Portland man has been sentenced to 14 1/2 years in prison for raping and abusing a homeless woman in 2022 in the Parkrose neighborhood, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Early on June 19, 2022, officers responded to the area of ​​Northeast 115th Avenue and Northeast Sumner Street after a woman reported she had been raped.

According to court documents filed on June 21, 2022, the woman told police that a man who lived in a mobile home near Northeast Marx Street had held her in his mobile home where he physically and sexually assaulted her.

Based on a description of the man and DNA evidence from a rape kit taken at the hospital, police identified James Earl Griffin Jr., now 39, as the suspect.

On June 13, 2024, a Multnomah County jury found Griffin guilty of:

  • Two counts of first-degree rape.
  • Two counts of first-degree sodomy.
  • One count of first-degree sexual abuse.
  • One count of fourth-degree assault.
  • A charge of coercion.

The jury found Griffin No guilty of two counts of first-degree kidnapping.

On Wednesday, Judge Cheryl Albrecht sentenced Griffin to 175 months in prison. He will be transferred to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
