NFL game odds favor taxpayers as legal sports betting increases

What will NFL season 7 bring with widespread legal sports betting? All indications are that we can expect increased enthusiasm for betting.

Can Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce lead the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl? How can Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud build on his sensational rookie season? Could Aaron Rodgers’ return from injury finally be the deciding factor for the New York Jets?

These are some of the questions fans are asking (and betting on) as the 2024 NFL season kicks off Thursday night. Another question many are asking is: What will the seventh NFL season of widespread legal sports betting bring?

All indications are that we can expect increased enthusiasm for placing bets in a well-regulated market. Since the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting in 2018, Washington, D.C., and 38 states have allowed sports betting in some form, giving two-thirds of American adults legal wagering options in their home states.

Americans will bet billions on NFL games

This year, the American Gaming Association estimates that Americans will bet $35 billion on the NFL season.

It should come as no surprise, then, that 77% of Americans support legalizing sports betting in their home state and that 9 in 10 Americans consider sports betting to be an acceptable form of entertainment. Last year, 85% of American adults said they agreed with the Supreme Court’s decision allowing sports betting to be legalized across the United States, up from 63% in 2019.

How to play responsibly: Public acceptance of sports betting shows that now is the time to help problem gamblers

Why the growing support for legal sports betting? Consumers and elected leaders have figured out that legal access to a pastime that millions of Americans have always participated in (historically through offshore sportsbooks and websites) is the right way to go.

In the United States, a vast majority of gambling is now done through legal means, where consumers enjoy the protection of a regulated market. Americans recognize that this marks a radical change from the days when gambling was dominated by illegal and predatory operators.

Legal operators know that promoting responsible gambling is in everyone’s best interest. This means investing millions of dollars each year in responsible gambling tools and education, and taking age and identity verification seriously to reserve gambling exclusively for adults.

Legal sports betting generates billions of dollars in tax revenue

Americans also support legal betting for its economic benefits. The billions of dollars in taxes generated each year by legal sports betting continue to fund critical public projects across the country.

September not only marks the start of the NFL season, but also marks Responsible Gaming Education Month. In the coming weeks, the gaming industry will be announcing new initiatives to reinforce our responsible commitments, as well as proudly showcase our current efforts.

As always, the NFL season will bring with it its fair share of sports betting skeptics. Just as fans have a right to have an opinion on which team will win this season’s Super Bowl, they also have a right to have an opinion on legal betting.

The facts are clear, however: the vast majority of Americans view legal betting as a safe and enjoyable part of our sports culture, and the industry is making sure it stays that way.
