Free Balance Event for Seniors and Healthcare Providers

Sanford Center for Aging, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of older adults, is pleased to announce a special event, “Stay Strong: Balance and Movement as We Age,” taking place on Friday, September 20, on the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) campus. This event is designed to promote awareness and education about balance and mobility, crucial aspects of health and wellness as we age.

DATE: Friday, September 20, 2024

LOCATION: OLLI Campus: 604 W Moana Lane

Conference: 10 – 11:30 am

Balance assessments: 12:00 to 14:00 hours

The “Stay Strong” event aims to empower older adults with the knowledge and tools to maintain and improve their balance and mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and improve overall quality of life.

The event will kick off with an informational conference from 10 to 11:30 a.m., featuring speakers from the Sanford Center on Aging: Jessica Yurtinus, DPT, MS, associate director of the Nevada Geriatric Education Center; and Leslie Baker, PharmD, BCGP, director of Geriatric Pharmacy Services. The conference will cover key topics such as the benefits of movement on physical and psychological well-being; how aging affects muscle strength and joint flexibility; and how medication side effects can increase the risk of falls.

Following the conference, from 12 to 2 p.m., attendees are invited to participate in free balance assessments. These assessments, conducted by trained professionals, will provide personalized feedback and recommendations for improving balance and stability. Times must be scheduled in advance.

The event is free and open to the public thanks to support from the Nevada Goes Falls Free Coalition. Participants do not need to be OLLI members. Pre-registration is recommended. To register, visit the Stay Steady registration page.
