Trump lawyer corrects himself after saying Clarence Thomas ‘directed’ him in election subversion case

WASHINGTON, DC: In a serious error, Donald Trump’s defense lawyer said that Judge Clarence Thomas had “ordered” him to question the authority of special prosecutor Jack Smith.

However, John Lauro quickly corrected himself during the hearing on Thursday, September 5, in the electoral subversion case.

The lawyer referred to the new accusation filed by Jack Smith against Donald Trump days after the Supreme Court ruled on presidential immunity. He argued that the case should be dismissed, referring to Thomas’ memo on that ruling.

“The lower courts should therefore answer these essential questions about the special counsel’s appointment before proceeding. If this unprecedented prosecution (against Trump) is to proceed, it must be conducted by someone duly empowered to do so by the American people,” Thomas wrote in his individual concurring opinion.

The case was thrown out by Judge Aileen Cannon, who presided over the classified documents case against Trump, according to Newsweek.

Lauro stressed that the court should follow the same lead as Cannon at the hearing on Thursday, Sept. 5, saying the court should decide the issue of the special counsel’s authority “in light of Judge Thomas’ interest” in him.

Justice Clarence Thomas under fire online for Donald Trump defense attorney’s statement

Netizens were quick to react to attorney John Lauro’s gaffe during the hearing and mocked Clarence Thomas. Many called for a thorough investigation into Justice’s involvement in the related cases.

One user said on X: “Clarence and Ginni Thomas are compromised and corrupt. They ooze corruption and are eroding our democracy. They must be held accountable.”

“Meanwhile, the MAGA Republican Party is full of liars and rule-breakers, how can they continue to get away with breaking all these rules? Why do I feel like Clarence Thomas is going to get away with this too?” another criticized.

One person trolled: “Crooked Clarence needs to go. He’s giving corruption a bad name.”

“What the hell? We need a thorough investigation into everything, especially in light of the Tenet manipulation,” one user demanded.

“Well, she certainly mapped it out for them from the sidelines. Given the feedback, I’m sure there was no need for a follow-up email from Ginny,” one person speculated.

Another said: “Remove him and it will be time to prosecute the orange criminal for electoral interference.”
