‘Morning Joe’ Welcomes Liz Cheney for Supporting Harris

The “Morning Joe” team says Liz Cheney’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris is positive, but they’re not entirely surprised. As host Joe Scarborough said, Cheney is “just voting for democracy.”

“She’s voting to keep the constitutional republic alive with Madisonian checks and balances,” Scarborough added.

He then turned his attention to Donald Trump, saying, “Something I’ve been saying here since 2015: He doesn’t talk like a conservative. He’s abandoned conservatives on the issues that matter most to them. So at this point, are you in favor of a cult of personality? Do you want to be part of a cult of personality, or do you want the republic to endure?”

“That’s what matters when it comes to the republic as we know it, with Madisonian democracy and checks and balances. Liz Cheney shows Madisonian democracy. We shouldn’t be surprised,” the MSNBC host reiterated.

Cheney’s support is not a surprise, Willie Geist agreed, noting: “What is surprising, though, is that ‘his and hers’ among conservatives today is a minority position, which is to say that most Republicans — most people who now call themselves conservatives or were conservatives but are really just Trump supporters — now agree with all the things you just laid out.”

“All the contradictions that Donald Trump presents to conservatives, all the shifts in opinion and core issues like abortion, debt and deficit, immigration, all those things, what she’s saying is that Donald Trump has not only changed his mind on that, but he represents something that is so contrary, not only to conservatism but to the American way of life, to democracy, that she has to stay at the door,” Geist added.

“I guess the only surprise to me of late, whatever it has been since January 6th, when she officially took the lead on that investigation, along with many Democrats, is that more Republicans haven’t taken that door that was presented on January 6th and said, ‘He’s abandoned us, he’s left us, he’s led us down this disastrous path. We have no choice but to oppose him,’” he continued. “But then again, she, Adam Kinzinger or other Republicans remain in the minority among conservatives among Republicans.”

Cheney endorsed Harris on Wednesday during a speech at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. “Because of the danger that Donald Trump represents, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, but I will vote for Kamala Harris,” she said in a video from the event shared on X.

Harris’ campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement published by NBC News: “She is a patriot who loves this country and prioritizes our democracy and our Constitution. Vice President Harris will be a president for all Americans, regardless of political party.”

“For any American looking to reject the chaos and division of Donald Trump, turn the page, and seek a new path that protects our freedoms and upholds the American values we all believe in, there is a place for you in the Harris-Walz coalition, and we will continue to work to earn your support,” Dillon added.
