“You can see a steely glint in his eyes; despite the subject matter, he doesn’t feel bad about himself here” – Luck And Strange by David Gilmour

One of the great ironies of the solo album is that you’d actually expect any musician to quit their day job to explore new ground. Why bother doing it otherwise? You might as well make another “band” album. But there’s the catch: most fans just want more of the same.

And what if you are, in any case, largely responsible for the sound of one of the world’s biggest bands, as arguably is David Gilmour? It stands to reason that your own music retains certain distinctive characteristics, even if you decide to release a reggae album. Isn’t it just business as usual?
