Roquan Smith takes offense at Chiefs player who shoved him on sideline after play: ‘He better watch out’

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith was given a postgame warning by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Peyton Hendershot following a confrontation on the sideline Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

During the Ravens’ loss to the Chiefs to kick off the new NFL season, there was a moment early in the fourth quarter when Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was struggling to get a first down.

After doing so, it appeared that Smith shoved Mahomes late, and the quarterback fell to the turf, causing the home crowd to begin to get furious thinking a penalty should have been called.

The yellow handkerchiefs, however, remained in the referee’s pockets. Smith, who was waving his hands at the time to indicate that it was not a personal foul, said Mahomes tried to sell it as a penalty.

“Oh, he collapsed. Yeah, he collapsed,” Smith told reporters after the game. “That’s why the refs didn’t penalize him; it was a great decision by the ref.”

But as Smith waved off the call, Hendershot, who was wearing street clothes as an inactive Chiefs player during the game, was seen taking offense at Smith’s actions toward his quarterback.

The broadcast showed a moment where Hendershot appeared to push Smith, and the linebacker confirmed it after the game with a message as well.

“But whoever 88 is, I don’t know who he is, but he better watch out,” Smith said. “He gave a little push with skill.”

Reporters quickly questioned Smith again to confirm what happened as he too appeared to turn away after Hendershot shoved him on the Chiefs sideline, leading to a scrum before the tension was defused.

“Whoever number 88 is, I have no idea who it is, but I’ll see it when I see it,” Smith concluded before answering another question.

The Chiefs would score on that drive, when rookie Xavier Worthy got his second career touchdown on just his third touch of the ball in his NFL debut, a 35-yard score off a blown coverage.

Smith’s personal stats were solid, as he led the Ravens in tackles with seven (four solo) while also intercepting Mahomes late in the first half. However, he did have a tackle on the neck in his first regular-season action when he tried to take down Rashee Rice.

The Ravens ultimately fell to the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs in tragic fashion as it appeared they had a chance to tie, or even win, the game after tight end Isaiah Likely caught what appeared to be a touchdown on the final play of regulation. However, Likely’s foot was an inch out of bounds.

Since they are not division foes, the Ravens won’t see the Chiefs again until a potential playoff matchup like the one they had in the AFC Championship Game earlier this year.

If that happens, Smith was very clear that he will see Hendershot after struggling with his actions in Week 1.
