“His dream was to cure as many people as he could”: Calcutta doctor’s mother writes emotional letter | Nation

PTC Web Desk: In a deeply emotional open letter, the mother of the Kolkata-based junior doctor, who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, shared her daughter’s lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, not for profit, but to cure as many people as she could. The letter, written on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who helped her daughter achieve that dream.

“I am the mother of the deceased… Today, on Teachers’ Day, I honour all the teachers on behalf of my daughter. Since childhood, her dream was to become a doctor and you were the inspiration behind that dream,” the letter read, India Today reported.

The mother said her daughter had a deep sense of purpose in studying medicine. She explained that while her family provided unwavering support, it was the guidance and encouragement of her teachers that helped her daughter realize her dream of becoming a doctor. “Thanks to great teachers like you, she was able to become the person she always dreamed of being,” the grieving mother wrote.

In the letter, she recalls a touching conversation in which her daughter revealed her true motivation for becoming a doctor: “My daughter used to say, ‘Mom, I don’t need money. I just want to get as many degrees and help as many patients as possible.’”

The body of the 31-year-old junior doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking nationwide outrage. Doctors across the country went on strike to demand better workplace safety and justice for the slain doctor.

A civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, was arrested the day after the murder, but the case has since been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In her letter, the mother described the horrific day of the attack, recounting how her daughter had spent the entire day caring for patients, fulfilling the role she had always dreamed of. “Even that day, when she left home, she cared for many patients in the hospital. But her dreams were brutally strangled. Her goal of becoming a gold medalist in Medicine, planned that very night, was cut short,” she lamented.

The mother also alleged that the hospital authorities had taken steps to cover up the crime and destroyed vital evidence. “Even after this horrific incident, the hospital authorities and the administration took steps to destroy all evidence,” she said. A diary found near the body revealed the doctor’s aspirations to win a gold medal and other prestigious awards in her medical career.

In a plea for justice, the grieving mother urged medical professionals, teachers and hospital staff to come forward with any information they may have about the crime. “As his mother, I respectfully request all medical professors, doctors, health authorities and nursing staff to come forward with any information or evidence about the incident. The silence of good people only strengthens the criminals,” she wrote.
