A classic film is reportedly getting a sequel with the original cast

A sequel to the classic adventure film ‘The Goonies’ is reportedly in the works and the original cast will return.

The 1985 film follows a group of kids from Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon, who follow a treasure map to try to save their homes from foreclosure.

Award-winning actors Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Corey Feldman starred in the film as children.

The news was originally reported by The Sun, which reports that the film could begin production next summer and be released in theaters in 2026 or 2027.

“There has been a lot of talk about a Goonies reboot, but the go-ahead has finally been given to go ahead,” a source told The Sun. “The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience.”

Some cast members reunited virtually in 2020 for Josh Gad’s web series and writer Steven Spielberg explained why there hasn’t been a sequel yet.

“Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t stick,” he said. “The problem is the bar that you all set for this genre. I don’t think we’ve been able to come up with a better idea than The Goonies that we all did in the ’80s.”
